Champions inspire Sports Foundation

Young residents, Abdirisak Ahmed and Muktar Mohammed, have won gold medals in Junior Athletics at county and national levels, while Muktar also plays for Sheffield Wednesday. Their achievements inspired the Somali community in Burngreave to launch the Sheffield Sports Foundation in June.

Urban Music

The Cactus Club hosted three nights of urban music, rap and break dancing in August 2005. The events were organised by Urban Music, who started out of a desire for all types of street music to have a positive influence on youngsters.

When funding for Burngreave Sports Network came to an end, Rafiq Saleh, Amin Saleh and Tariq Ahmed set up Burngreave FC. The team is currently for people aged 17 upwards and we aim to encourage young people into the team. We are always looking for a local business to sponsor the team.

Fishing with SHEBEEN

The event, a joint initiative between the Environment Agency’s Leeds office and SHEBEEN (Sheffield Black & Ethnic Minority Environmental Network), was one of a series marking National Fishing Week.

Local Under 10s team Earl Marshall Juniors have enjoyed an excellent start to the 2005 season. Although the sequence of seven wins and a draw against league leaders Maltby Juniors was upset with a narrow 1–0 away defeat to Whiston Wildcats, the team is through to the quarter finals of the Trophy Competition and is well placed to push for promotion in the second half of the league campaign.

After a turbulent 2005 pre-season where Burngreave Saints Under 8s lost quite a few players, we basically assembled a whole new squad, only retaining half of last season’s squad. After only a couple of friendlies, we went into the season not really prepared and lost the first three games.
