Fancy trying out bowling?

Story: Lisa Harrison

Crown green bowling is one of Britain’s oldest sports. It’s fun to play, easy to pick up but difficult to master, and offers a great source of gentle exercise. Sadly, there wasn’t much opportunity for new people to get involved in the sport in this area, but that’s about to change!

Local residents Winnie Bentley and Lisa Harrison are organising a taster session on crown green bowling for newcomers, beginners, and long-established enthusiasts alike. This is being organised as an opportunity to try out the sport in an informal setting, where you can learn the rules, try it out and see for yourself if you want to get involved.

We’re hoping that enough people will be interested to enable us to set up beginners’ sessions on a weekly basis, which will be discussed at the taster day. The main aim is to hopefully establish a ladies’ bowling team for this area, but the organisers are keen to stress that this would be a long way off at this stage, and the event will be completely informal.

If you’re interested in trying out bowling, we’d love to hear from you. The session will happen on Sunday 13th April at the bowling green at Abbeyfield Park, at 2pm. You don’t need to bring any equipment with you, although people with their own woods are being encouraged to bring them along. You must, however, wear flat shoes (trainers are perfect).

If you’d like to try bowling but can’t make the taster session, please contact the Messenger on 242 0564.
