Tree planting at Grimesthorpe allotments

Story: Tim Shortland

Burngreave Community Forestry will begin the planting of twenty heavy standard White Mulberry trees.

The trees will be planted on the re-landscaped bank next to Grimesthorpe Allotments on Grimesthorpe Road.

The planting is aimed at renewing the presence of mulberries in this location following the removal of mature mulberries across the road to make way for the new development. The white mulberry is a smallish tree that produces a pink/red elongated raspberry shaped sweet fruit. Its leaves are used in the production of silk as they provide a food source for silk worms.

The verge was previously home to raspberries and blackberries that were harvested by local people. It is hoped that the trees will provide an alternative harvest and will in the longer term form the upper canopy to a forest gardening project that could be underplanted with all manner of fruit bushes and other plants.
